CWAPCCWAPC believes that new legislation is desperately needed to prevent tragic incidents that occur when wild animals are kept as pets. Current federal law addresses a wide variety of animal concerns and our government works to enforce existing laws for animal protection. However, much stronger laws are needed.

The CWAPC Legislation task force will focus on supporting and passing laws relevant to the issue of keeping dangerous wild animals as pets. The first goal is to pass the Captive Wildlife Safety Act and the Captive Exotic Animal Protection Act. In parallel, the goal is to introduce and pass two Exotic Pet bills and two Canned Hunt Bills at the state level, by 2006.

The more involved citizens become in the political process, the sooner new legislation will be passed. Because it takes a long time to pass a federal law, many laws are first introduced at the state or local level, where approval can be faster and easier. No matter how you choose to participate, whether it be writing, calling or visiting your public officials, you have a voice. In fact, for every one piece of communication received, it is seen as the equivalent of 100 people making a similar contact and sharing that same opinion. Your actions count. You can make a difference.

Working together to pass legislation, CWAPC will make a difference in reducing the availability, volume and presence of dangerous wild animals as pets.
